I’m thrilled to be working with Barclay Publicity on the release of my first indie book, READY TO ROCK. It’s been a long journey to get here, with some interesting twists along the path.
I’ve always loved writing, and all through grade school and high school my teachers maintained that I was destined to be a novelist. This thrilled my mother to no end. As an avid reader, she couldn’t imagine anything more wonderful than her daughter growing up to be a writer!
Which naturally meant that I rejected a writing career unequivocally. How could I not, with all those authority figures telling me my future was predetermined? So I went to law school instead (which actually involved a lot of writing, but I was okay with that because it was nonfiction and thus couldn’t be seen as capitulating to the powers that be).
I had a rewarding and fulfilling career working with judges, but eventually I began to feel the itch. So I bought a laptop and started secretly writing a novel after work. I got really caught up in the story, and before I knew it I was writing every weekend. All weekend. During my lunch hour. I was obsessed!
That first book turned into a very long, wildly adventurous western romance. I loved it. I still do. I mean, it’s a train wreck of a book, but I had such fun writing it! And I learned so much. When I finally finished it—four years later—I missed the characters so much that I reached back into the book, grabbed the hero and heroine by the hand, and yanked them into the present, from the California gold rush all the way forward in time to the New York City music scene. That book ultimately became READY TO ROCK.
I spent a few more years working on the story, which eventually won the Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart award (under the title THE SINNERS). That was in 2011. Indie publishing was just taking off, but I didn’t self publish the book because the word on the street was that rock stars don’t sell. Ha!
Instead, I went the traditional route; joined RWA, landed an agent, published five books with Avon Romance. But all that time, READY TO ROCK was simmering away on the back burner. I knew it was only a matter of time before I’d be ready to take it out into the world.
The time is now! I’m thrilled to take this next step into indie, and I’m so grateful to everyone who’s encouraged me along the way. My brother and sister, my husband, even my teachers. But most especially my Mom. I wish she were here to walk the path with me, but I’m sure she’s looking down on me today saying, “I knew you were destined to be an author!”
You were right, Mom. I hope you’re proud of me.
So now it’s on to the next book, and the next stage of this publishing journey. I hope you’ll come along with me. And remember, listen to your mother!
All the best,
