BP: We know RESTRAINT is the second novel in the series. Can you tell us what it is about?
RCW: Restraint is the second volume in The Revelation Series. At its core, it’s a forbidden love story, entangled with fantasy worlds and paranormal creatures. While the first volume, Revelation, followed college freshman Eve Collins through her journey of self-discovery, Restraint, explores the forbidden relationship between Eve and her gargoyle protector, Asher St. Michael.
BP: For readers who haven’t yet read REVELATION (or RESTRAINT), can you tell us a bit about the series, including the world you’ve set it in, and what we can look forward to next?
RCW: The contemporary story of Restraint moves the characters to England and is set both in Wiltshire and London. In this volume, Eve learns more about the clan’s history and family, as well as, meets other gargoyle clan’s in surrounding countries. Readers are also introduced to The Royal Council of Protectors members.
BP: Are any of the characters based off of people you know or are they like you in any way?
RCW: *laughs*, I get asked this a lot. No, none of the characters in any of The Revelation Series volumes are designed after people I know, or myself. However, I did pull some descriptive elements from people that surround me. For instance, Eve’s eye color and birthday are the same as my daughter. In Revelation, book one, Eve and Aria’s introduction, is the same way I met my college roommate. Other than that, the characters are completely from my imagination.
BP: Tell us more about Asher. What about him makes him “hero material”?
RCW: Asher St. Michael is cocky, good-looking, and full of secrets. He struggles a lot with his loyalty to duty and family, and his growing attraction and feelings for Eve. Asher tends to compartmentalize in order to function daily and Eve’s entrance into his life really throws him off balance. He’s a man who will drive you crazy, but love you hard.
BP: And what about Eve? What makes her a good heroine?
RCW: One of the many things I love about creating Eve Collins is that she is stubborn, mature, and isn’t a side-line heroine. In the midst of her world turning upside down, Eve still manages to hold her head high and logically and rationally be able to maneuver all that is thrown at her. In Restraint, I feel like she’s grown a great deal. Her level of acceptance and tolerance has broadened and she’s starting to come into her own with the St. Michael’s.
BP: Was there a scene, or scenes, that you really enjoyed writing?
RCW: There’s this really amazing ‘chamber’ scene with Eve, Asher, Abby and Callan in Restraint that I absolutely loved writing. It’s very sensual but full of hidden meaning and longing. On an emotional level, it’s one of my favorite scenes in this book.
BP: Which character has been the hardest for you to write, and why?
RCW: Gage. Gage Gallagher and I have a love hate relationship. He drives me insane, in all my books actually – lol. Gage is very manipulative, cunning, and you never know where he stands. For a writer, that’s a tough place to be in with a character. Though misunderstood, he always has an agenda. For me, it’s difficult to write Gage because only Gage knows what his motives are, and where his storyline is going. So for lack of a better word, I can never gauge where Gage is going ;)
BP: OK, switching to something not about RESTRAINT, have you read any books recently that you would recommend to our readers?
RCW: YES! My favorite book, at the moment, is Lick by Kylie Scott. MAL is the best ever. You’ll laugh (like pee your pants laugh), cry, throw the book/kindle, and fall in love. Two others I would recommend are: Wingwoman by Bella Jewel and Inamorata by Megan Chance. While I finish writing The Revelation Series, I’m holding off on all my paranormal/fantasy romances, which is killing me, and these books, plus all of Jay Crownover’s books, are getting me through.
BP: You’re a self-published author, which is awesome. How did you get started writing? Did you ever look into being “traditionally” published?
RCW: When I began writing The Revelation Series, it was more of a hobby, something fun I was doing to relax through a creative outlet. When it was suggested I publish it and let others read it, traditional publishing was not on my radar, I always figured I would self publish the series and if other readers embraced it, then I would be so grateful and excited. I never thought it would lead to where it has today. I’m so grateful and humbled by the response.
BP: Do you have any advice for those who are aspiring to be writers/published authors?
RCW: Take the plunge. It’s scary, but it’s also amazing and freeing. The key, in my opinion, is to write something you love because at the end of the day, if you wouldn’t read your own story, and love it, why should others? Stay true to yourself and your creative vision.
BP: You have a marketing background, so you understand some of the business side of being an author. What do you see as the challenges facing yourself, and other paranormal authors? What are your suggestions on how the industry can better handle these challenges?
RCW: This is a difficult question for me because I am a newbie. As a reader, and lover of this genre, I can say that I felt overdosed with the same story. It’s why I started writing The Revelation Series. I wanted something fresh and new. I think the challenge, for any market really, is to keep stories fresh and new. It’s a difficult thing to do, but one that pays out in the end.
BP: How can readers connect with you and of course, buy REVELATION and RESTRAINT?
RCW: To learn more about the books or myself you can head over to my website, social media pages, and/or Goodreads page. In addition, sign up for my newsletter or join Randi’s Rebels Street Team for fun swag, announcements, etc.
Thank you Randi, for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us here at Barclay Publicity. We are extremely excited for the release of RESTRAINT on August 1 and are looking forward to REDEMPTION, which is book 3 and should be out in November, 2014.
