Please tell readers what the Secrets and Shadows series is about:
Just that…secrets and shadows. The series is set in the small town of Madison, Indiana, a little river town perched on the edge of the Ohio River. You have the Bell family and their story wraps up with LONG FOR ME, and then a whole new mystery kicks off with DEEPER THAN NEED. We have some messed-up heroes who bring a whole new meaning to the word tortured, heroines who are their match in every way…and awful, ugly secrets that threatened to tear the town apart.
Why romantic suspense?
I’m not sure…I’m drawn to it. I’m the one who sees things lurking everywhere. The cop is always following me, even when he isn’t and I haven’t done anything wrong. The guy shuffling into the store is up to something, even if all he is doing is buying a pack of cigarettes. I guess my paranoia just led me there.
Tell us a little about Christina Bell, and what makes her the “leading lady” in LONG FOR ME.
It was her turn…Chris was the youngest of the Bell siblings and in her way, the most closed off. She never let herself get close to anybody because she couldn’t stand the idea of hurting again when she lost that person.
But all along, there was her best friend, Guy. He’s just been waiting for her to notice him. Except now that she has, there’s this huge, awful thing between them and he’s convinced she’ll never be able to love him now.
We’re curious, are any of your characters/stories anything like you or your life?
If you’ve read my books, you’ll understand me when I say…I mess my people up…they’ll have a happy ever after, but they’ll hurt along the way to get there. I don’t try to ‘write’ myself into my books. But…there are some things I see in my characters that I can relate to. Chris has suffered from depression, and I’ve been there. She has ADHD, which even as an adult, can make life rough for her and I have that as well, plus my youngest lives with it. A number of my characters cope with fear or stress through the fine art of sarcasm and I definitely can relate to that. Some of my characters have either dealt with substances/alcohol abuse or their family members have. I’ve never had that struggle personally, but growing up, I witnessed it. I know how it can affect the people around you and I’ve seen the battles people wage…so there are bits and pieces of things I’ve seen that work their way in.
Can you share three books you recently read and would recommend?
THE LIVES OF TAO & THE DEATHS OF TAO by Wes Chu—if you’re into some really character-driven SF, these books are amazing. And…MERCY by Helenkay Dimon.
Have you won any Honors, Citations or Prizes?
The first book in my UF series, Blade Song, written as J.C. Daniels won the Reviewer’s Choice Award in 2013.
I’ve won the National Reader’s Choice Award for Best Novella (THE UNWILLING) for Romantic Suspense, my book IF YOU HEAR HER won both the Booksellers Best Award and The CRW Award of Excellence.
Tell us anything about you as a working writer that you think might be interesting or unusual:
I don’t know how unusual or interesting this is, but the half the job of being a working writer doesn’t involve writing. There’s promo, there’s the job of keeping up with expenses, there’s email…now if all of that was lovely letters from readers, it would rock. But that is never the case.
What else are you working on?
The third book in my contemporary series about the Barnes brothers…the first one was about a tattoo artist and he had brothers. Several of them. I’m also working on another book in my UF series, and gearing up for my next RS series.
